Blood of the Dragon: The Alien Tree of Socotra and Its Crimson Resin

There is a tree on an island in the Indian Ocean that looks like a mushroom with a thousand swords sticking out of it. When you cut the bark, it bleeds red.
The dragon's blood tree — Dracaena cinnabari — grows only on Socotra, a Yemeni island about 380 kilometres south of the Arabian Peninsula. It is endemic to that one place and nowhere else. The resin it produces, called dragon's blood, is a deep crimson that turns brick-red as it dries. It has been collected, traded, and used as medicine, dye, incense, and alchemical ingredient for at least two thousand years.
The tree has a bizarre, umbrella-like canopy of rigid leaves atop a thick, bare trunk that branches into tufts at the top. It looks like it escaped from a Dr. Seuss illustration. But the resin it produces is serious business. In Socotra, every local uses it. In the ancient world, it travelled the same Incense Roads that carried frankincense from Dhofar to Rome. In modern labs, scientists are studying its antifungal, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties.
The Island That Time Left Alone
Socotra has been isolated from the Arabian mainland for around 20 million years. That isolation produced a botanical wonderland: of the 825 plant species recorded on the archipelago, 307 — roughly 37% — exist nowhere else on earth. The dragon's blood tree is the flagship. UNESCO recognised the entire archipelago as a Natural World Heritage site in 2008, citing its "global importance for biodiversity conservation."
The dragon's blood tree is not a true tree in the way an oak or a pine is. It is a monocot — related to asparagus and lilies — that evolved a woody, arborescent form through millions of years of adaptation to Socotra's dry highlands. The trees grow at altitudes between 300 and 1,480 metres, mostly in the central and eastern parts of the island, where the limestone substrate and seasonal fog create a niche so specific that the species cannot establish itself anywhere else.
That specificity is now a liability. Climate models project that drier conditions caused by global warming will slash the tree's potential habitat by another 45% by 2080. A 2022 study in Forests using drone inventories of the Firmihin plateau — the species' stronghold — found that the average tree age is around 300 years, with almost no young trees surviving to replace them.
What Dragon's Blood Actually Is
The name "dragon's blood" is not specific to Socotra. It is a common name applied to red resins from at least six different plant genera — Dracaena, Daemonorops, Calamus, Pterocarpus, Eucalyptus, and Croton — each with its own chemistry and origin. If you buy "dragon's blood" from a generic supplier, you have no way of knowing which species it came from without chemical analysis.
The Socotran variety is the original and the most prized. On the island, local people distinguish between two grades. Emzoloh is the pure resin — collected by making shallow incisions in the bark of young female trees and letting the sap drip out and harden into bright red tears. Eda'a is a mixed product where the bark is cut along with the resin, then cooked together. Eda'a accounts for about 84% of wound damage on trees, according to a 2020 study of the Firmihin forest published in Forests.
The Arabic name Dam Alakhwin — "brother's blood" — comes from a local legend about two brothers who fought to the death and were buried on the spot where the first trees grew. The Socotri name for the tree is ahrieb. The Greek name Dracaena comes from drakaina, meaning female dragon, a reference to the resin's colour and the tree's reptilian silhouette. The species name cinnabari refers to the cinnamon-like hue of the dried resin.
A Two-Thousand-Year-Old Medicine Chest
The first written record of Socotran dragon's blood appears in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a first-century Greek navigational text, which describes the island's "cinnabar" collected in drops from the trees. Dioscorides mentioned it in his De Materia Medica around 90 AD as kinnabari, brought from Africa for use in medicines. For the next two thousand years, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European physicians prescribed it for wounds, ulcers, dysentery, fevers, and fractures.
Modern surveys back this up. A 2018 study in Plants interviewed Socotri informants and found that 100% reported medicinal use of the resin. It is applied to skin diseases, dental infections, eye injuries, gastrointestinal complaints, and postpartum bleeding. The same study showed that the resin's crude methanolic extract exhibits strong antifungal activity against Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes — two dermatophytes that cause skin and nail infections — confirming that the traditional use for skin problems has a pharmacological basis.
A 2021 review in BioMed Research International catalogued the resin's isolated compounds — more than 300 flavonoids, steroids, and phenols — and listed its confirmed bioactivities: anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, wound-healing, and even anticancer effects in vitro against certain cell lines. That research is early-stage and mostly preclinical. But it explains why this resin has been in continuous medical use longer than most drugs have existed.
Beyond Medicine: Pigment, Varnish, and Incense
Dragon's blood was more than a pharmacy. The resin dissolves completely in alcohol, producing a vivid red solution that was used as a colourant in European manuscripts, Renaissance paintings, and traditional Socotran crafts. Art historians have identified it in medieval reverse glass paintings in German museums. It was also a prized ingredient in violin varnish — the deep red glow of some classical Cremonese instruments has been attributed to dragon's blood mixed into the finish.
As incense, dragon's blood is different from anything in the frankincense family. Where Boswellia sacra gives you bright citrus and pine, and myrrh gives you bitter earthiness, dragon's blood smoulders with a warm, sweet, vanilla-like scent — closer to benzoin than to the Arabian resins. It is used in some East Asian incense traditions and in Western occult and ceremonial applications. The red smoke is visually striking, though the scent is subtle compared to frankincense.
The Conservation Picture
The dragon's blood tree is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The Socotra EPA's budget was cut to $5,000 annually before the Yemeni civil war, and the conflict has only deepened the funding gap. International conservation projects have lost momentum. The Firmihin forest, which holds about 40% of the island's trees on just 2% of its suitable habitat, is overmature — a 2021 drone survey counted 35,542 living trees, most of them centuries old, with young trees almost completely absent.
The main threats are not the resin harvesters. Overgrazing by goats is the biggest problem — goats eat the seedlings before they can establish. Cyclone intensity has increased with climate change; the 2015 cyclone that hit Socotra uprooted over 2,000 trees in Firmihin alone. And the tree's canopy is ecologically critical — it captures horizontal precipitation, providing water equivalent to more than 40% of the island's annual rainfall to the plants growing beneath it. Losing the dragon's blood tree means losing the ecosystem it supports.
There are parallels here to the frankincense sustainability crisis in Dhofar. Both are ancient, species-specific resin trades built around trees that grow in a single geographic pocket. Both are threatened by the same economic logic: rising demand, falling oversight, and a lag between short-term exploitation and long-term collapse. The difference is that Boswellia sacra still has a chance at scale. Dracaena cinnabari may not.
Can You Still Burn It?
Authentic Socotran dragon's blood is hard to find outside Yemen, and what you do find is often adulterated or mislabelled. The 2018 ethnobotanical study found that samples on local Yemeni markets were "partly or totally substituted by different adulterants." On international markets, confusion is even worse — resins from Daemonorops (Southeast Asian rattan palm) and Croton (South American shrub) are frequently sold under the same name with no indication of which species they came from.
If you want to experience genuine Socotran dragon's blood, look for a vendor who can identify the resin by its solubility in methanol (authentic D. cinnabari resin dissolves completely) and its organoleptic profile — it should have a deep red colour, a slightly sweet and vanilla-tinged aroma when heated, and a brittle, glassy fracture. It burns at a lower temperature than frankincense, best on an electric warmer around 150-180°C. The smoke is not aggressive. It is warm, soft, and unexpectedly sweet — closer to a balm than a spice.
