Kyphi: The Lost Art of Egypt's 16-Ingredient Sacred Incense

Most incense is a single ingredient. Resin on charcoal, done. The Egyptians had something else entirely — a sixteen-component blend that took days to prepare, was read aloud from sacred texts while being mixed, and which Plutarch claimed could brighten your dreams.
They called it kapet — the word just meant "incense" in the general sense, the way we say "perfume." The Greeks turned it into kyphi. What it actually was, across the fifteen centuries it was made, shifted and evolved. But the core idea stayed the same: a compound incense that was more than the sum of its parts. Not a single resin burned alone, but a deliberate blend of resins, wine, honey, raisins, spices, and herbs, boiled and aged together into a paste that was then rolled into small pellets and placed on hot coals.
The simplest recipes had ten ingredients. The most elaborate, inscribed on the walls of the Temple of Edfu, had sixteen — and the number carried mathematical significance for the priests who compounded it. Plutarch wrote that the sixteen ingredients were a deliberate choice: the square of four, the only number whose square surface has a perimeter equal to its area. Whether or not that mattered to the actual scent, it tells you something about how seriously the process was taken.
The Recipe That Survived on a Temple Wall
The most complete Kyphi recipe we have is from the Temple of Horus at Edfu, built under the Ptolemies between 237 and 57 BCE. The recipe is carved into the temple wall in hieroglyphic script, right there in the laboratory area where the priests compounded their aromatics. It's a level of preservation you don't get with most ancient recipes — the Egyptians weren't writing cookbooks for posterity, they were recording sacred knowledge on stone because they believed it had to outlast them.
The Edfu recipe calls for mastic, pine resin, sweet flag, aspalathos (a thorny shrub we can't identify with certainty — scholars have debated it for over a century), camel grass, mint, and cinnamon to be ground together in a mortar. The liquid is discarded and the powder retained. Then cyperus, juniper berries, pine kernels, and an ingredient called "peker" (also unidentified) are ground separately and added.
This dry mixture is moistened with wine and left overnight. Separately, raisins are steeped in more wine — the "oasis wine" of the Egyptian oases, probably date wine — for five days. Then it's all boiled down by one-fifth. Honey and frankincense are boiled together in another vessel, also reduced by one-fifth. The two mixtures are combined, left overnight, and finally ground myrrh is mixed in. The result is a dark, sticky paste that dries into pellets.
The process takes over a week. The Edfu inscription specifies the exact weights: 273 grams each of the aromatic herbs, 1.5 deben (roughly 680g) of the base resins, 3.3 deben of raisins, and over a kilogram of frankincense and myrrh. These were industrial quantities — temple production, not personal use.
Dusk Belonged to Kyphi
Kyphi had a specific place in the daily ritual schedule. As we covered in Sacred Smoke: The Forgotten Ritual Schedule of Ancient Egypt, the Egyptian priestly day was marked by three aromatic offerings: frankincense at dawn (bright, ascending, linked to Ra), myrrh at midday (earth, bitterness, the anchored present), and Kyphi at dusk (complex, transitional, dream-adjacent).
Plutarch described it in his De Iside et Osiride as a compound that "induces sleep, allays anxieties, and brightens dreams." He wrote that the ingredients were not mixed casually — the sacred books were read aloud to the perfumers while they worked. The act of making Kyphi was itself a ritual, not separate from the incense but part of its preparation.
The resins themselves had symbolic weight. Frankincense was linked to the sun — bright, masculine, yang. Myrrh was gathered by moonlight, the weeping of trees under the cool night sky, feminine and receptive. The honey was linked to bees, which Egyptians believed sprang from the tears of Ra. The wine was the blood of Osiris. Every ingredient had a mythological referent, and the blend was designed to bring them into balance at the moment of transition between day and night.
Medicine That Smelled Like a Temple
The Egyptians didn't separate incense from medicine the way we do. Kyphi was both. The Ebers Papyrus, dating to around 1550 BCE — roughly a thousand years before the Edfu inscriptions — includes an early Kyphi recipe intended to "purify the home, give clothing a pleasant aroma, and sweeten the breath." But it also treated asthma, chest complaints, and digestive issues.
Galen, the Greek physician whose medical theories dominated European medicine for over a millennium, recorded a Kyphi recipe and noted it was taken both as an inhalant and as a drink for "liver and lung ailments." Dioscorides, the first-century pharmacologist whose De Materia Medica remained the standard reference for sixteen hundred years, also included it — as a temple purifier and a remedy for asthma. The same preparation that consecrated a sacred space was prescribed for shortness of breath.
Modern research is starting to catch up. The Hellenic Institute of Egyptology's Project KYPHI has been running since 2017, recreating the Edfu recipe in controlled conditions and testing its biological activity. The first experiment, led by pharmacist Markos Filianos, produced Kyphi with the available ingredients. The second, in October 2023 at the Agricultural University of Athens, used all sixteen ingredients. The team has since published a series of studies showing that Kyphi smoke exhibits antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus hominis, Candida albicans, and other organisms — with the strongest effects at a 1:1000 dilution. Notably, multidrug-resistant bacterial strains were also resistant to Kyphi, which the researchers suggest means it acts on similar molecular targets to conventional antibiotics.
A 2024 paper in Prague Egyptological Studies extended the investigation to a third independent laboratory, confirming that Kyphi smoke showed stronger antimicrobial effects than plain smoke across all tested organisms, particularly against Gram-negative bacteria. The researchers concluded that Kyphi's antimicrobial action is a collective property of all its ingredients, not one dominant compound — which is more or less how the Egyptians understood it all along.
The Ingredients That Made It Work
Here's what went into the Edfu recipe, as best we can identify them:
- Frankincense — Boswellia sacra from the Incense Roads, the bright, citrus-pine top note that lifted the entire blend.
- Myrrh — Commiphora myrrha from Punt, the bitter, grounding base note, symbolically linked to the underworld and transition.
- Mastic — Resin from the Pistacia lentiscus shrub, grown in the Mediterranean and the Aegean, sharp and piney.
- Pine resin — Likely from the Aleppo pine or similar Mediterranean species.
- Honey — The binder and sweetener, also a natural preservative and antimicrobial.
- Wine and raisins — Fermentation products that added a fruited, slightly boozy depth.
- Sweet flag — An aromatic rhizome, also used in Ayurvedic medicine as a nervine and mild sedative.
- Cyperus — A fragrant sedge, related to papyrus.
- Juniper berries — The same berries used in gin production, resinous and slightly piney on their own.
- Cinnamon — Warming, sweet, antimicrobial.
- Cardamom — Citrusy, camphoraceous, a standard in complex incense blends.
- Calamus / camel grass — Sweet, hay-like, grassy.
- Aspalathos — Unknown. Possibly a type of broom or spiny shrub found in the eastern Mediterranean.
- Mint — Cooling, sharp, a top-note herb that cuts through heavier resins.
Look at the range of it. Classic Arabian resins that are still the foundation of any serious aromatic collection — Omani frankincense and Yemeni myrrh — alongside Mediterranean mastic, Indian spices, Egyptian botanicals, Greek wine. The Kyphi recipe is essentially a map of the trade networks that supplied Egypt: Arabia, the Levant, the Aegean, the Horn of Africa, and the spice routes beyond.
What It Means to Make Kyphi Today
You can't walk into a store and buy authentic Kyphi made from the Edfu recipe. At least, nothing certified as such. The ingredients are a mix of identifiable and lost — we don't know what aspalathos was, or peker, and the proportions in the Edfu recipe are given in units that scholars still debate. The modern recreations by Project KYPHI and a handful of independent artisans are the closest we have, and they're careful to note that they're interpretations, not reproductions.
But you can approximate the experience. The core of Kyphi is a resin base — frankincense and myrrh — sweetened and bound with honey, fruited with wine-soaked raisins, and spiced with cinnamon, cardamom, and juniper. If you have access to quality resins, you can create a rough equivalent by grinding a small piece of Royal Green Hojari with a piece of Yemeni myrrh, adding a drop of honey and a pinch of cinnamon, and letting it sit overnight before burning it on a low-temperature electric warmer around 160-180°C.
It won't be what the priests of Edfu burned. But it will give you some sense of why this particular incense survived in the historical record for over a thousand years. The sweetness of the honey and raisins balances the sharp bitterness of myrrh. The spices add movement. The frankincense lifts everything. It's complex in a way that single-resin incense isn't — layered, changing, alive on the burner for longer than any of its components would last alone.
Burn it at dusk. That's when it belongs. Not because the recipe demands it, but because the Egyptians were right about the timing. A bright, citrus frankincense at dawn makes sense. A heavy, medicinal myrrh at midday makes sense. And a complex, sweet-yet-bitter, sun-and-moon blend at the threshold between day and night — that makes sense too. Some things the ancient world just got right, and we lose nothing by paying attention.
